Recently a friend turned me on to this warming, spicy elixir. I had to share my excitement about this concoction and hope that it proves to be as beneficial to you as it is to me and my family during the winter months. You can take this cider as a warming tonic to help keep colds at bay, or use it to literally blast your system for those who like to take a stronger approach to their wellness. Just thinking about this stuff warms me up!

Directions:

Combine equal parts garlic, rosemary, horseradish, ginger, and burdock or dandelion root. All of the above should be fresh if possible. Chop herbs, garlic and roots finely and grate ginger, horseradish and combine in a mason jar. If you like it spicy-add a hot pepper or two to your jar.

Gently warm raw apple cider vinegar until it is hot (not boiling)and pour over the herbs in your jar-leaving about an inch of vinegar on top of the plant material. Make sure the plant material is completely covered so it doesn’t mold. Use a spoon or a chopstick to release any air bubbles. Cover with the lid and shake gently. Keep your fire cider somewhere that is easily accessible like your kitchen counter or pantry and shake every day or two. If the plant material sticks above the vinegar, use a spoon to tuck it back under the surface of the vinegar.

After about 2 weeks you can strain the plant material from the vinegar using cheese cloth or flour sack cloth towel. Squeeze as much cider as you can out of this cloth. Store your vinegar in dark glass or out of light if in clear glass. If there is sediment at the bottom of your bottle you can pour the vinegar off the top into another bottle.

Enjoy!

We live about 20 minutes from the sweet little town of McMinnville. Having no retail presence at all in Yamhill county, we decided to go make our social debut at The Public Market in McMinnville. http://mcminnvillepublicmarket.com/ This year round market blew our minds! It is in the historic granary district of town in an old restored barn. There is a community cobb oven there for pizzas to feed folks during market, but also available for fundraisers and community events. There are pottery wheels in the back if you care to give it a go. A doggie wash too, and food carts oh plenty out front. There is even a miniature horse named Bam Bam that makes her rounds inside the market and has a permanent stall out front. If you ever find yourself in McMinnville, please come and say hello, and get your weekly produce shopping done and pick up some beautiful, artisan work from many talented vendors.

New Offerings: Hand-dipped beeswax candles

In Dallas Oregon, about 6 miles from here we found Lori, who has been hand dipping beeswax candles for over 20 years. When asked why she started to work with beeswax, I got a hilarious story of a friend’s leg waxing experiment gone bad. Thus, a huge hunk of beeswax was just waiting for what was next. We are offering her unscented, natural “hand dips”as an 8 inch taper. It takes about 60 hand dips to make a taper candle. Made with locally sourced beeswax, and cotton wicks with hemp cores, expect these candles to burn about 1 inch per hour-depending on draft, and to infuse your home with golden honey goodness. You can find her candles under the field and fashion category on our website. We bought all we could get from her but demand is high and the beeswax yield about half of what it normally is. So with that said-get them while you can!

Sneak Peek:

Fall seems to be my time that the creative juices really flow. We are offering a variety of new products that I am mighty excited about. We are adding a couple more gift collections for the holidays-a Bunch of Oregon Peppermint and a Bunch of Lavender Face Care. The Peppermint Collection includes our Cubeba Mint hand & foot cream, a Camamu, made from scratch, Merri-mint soap, and our popular Oregon Mint lip balm. The perfect gift for the cool tingly types in your life! The lavender collection features our delicious lavender honey face mask, lavender lip balm, and a new product-Luminous Lavender and Lemon Eye Brightening Cream. Order now for your Christmas List and save with our free shipping offer!

We will also have our Douglas Fir lip balm just for the winter months. Douglas fir smells bright-almost lemony and yet is unmistakably our NW tree. It is my favorite and I am excited to bring it back after all these years!

We also have some US made, 100% cotton, beautiful, hand dyed, hand printed textiles available. There will be bags and scarves available in varying colors, all with a beautiful wild carrot flower print. Available for Preorder currently, these beautiful items will arrive November 14th, view them now in our ‘Field and Fashion’ section!

So here I am now, rounding the corner into holiday madness and I am taking a breath and wanted to give a big thanks. Thanks to all of you for choosing to support a small, family-run business like Wild Carrot. Thanks for all the growth we have seen this year, your FB posts, your emails, phone calls, personal experiences with our products, and all around enthusiasm. Thanks too for signing up for our newsletter and for lending an eye and an ear to all that is happening out here on our little farm in rural Oregon.

Reflections:

Our 4 year old daughter started preschool this year. It has been odd not having her around to help us and sing to us and swirl around in the yurt 3 days a week. I never thought preschool would be something we would opt for-but she is thriving on friends and play time, crafts and learning more songs than I could have imagined.

We put a lot of things up this year! We canned fresh tuna, our very own beets, bread and butter pickles, blackberry jam, apricot amaretto jam, grape juice, and apple cider. We froze gallons of strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and peaches. We also made a lot of fruit leather and cordials-so delicious! For Wild Carrot we put up 55 gallons of St. John’s Wort oil and close to that many of Calendula oil. We are still harvesting calendula and making oil, as it hasn’t frosted hard enough and the plants keep producing beautiful golden flowers. We also made gallons of plantain, comfrey, chickweed, rose, yarrow, chamomile, nettle, burdock, and elder oils.

Since the last newsletter, we have lost both of our old farm dogs, Tita and Randy. Randy was a rescue dog that I adopted when he was 2. He was sprung from the clink, almost euthanized for chasing cows. He was really big for a Border Collie and looked a lot like a bear, and lived a luxurious, full 15 years when he left the farm. Tita died about 3 weeks after Randy did and I am still too raw to put much to words. I got Tita when she was 6 weeks old and we had almost 17 years together. She was my first dog and truly unique. She climbed ladders and trees and she was a skilled huntress. She was a mighty protectress too. We will miss you Tita Carmelita and Randoni on all of our plant gathering adventures, and miss your songs. I thank you for all the years of protection you gave us, the hundreds of miles of trails we walked together, and many, many good laughs.

Here it is June again, one of my favorite months-especially as it grows warmer and the days are so deliciously long. It is 9:47 PM as I write this and there is still light in the sky. Peeking out the window, I can see the bats flying against the dark blue sky, feasting on insects. The chickens are still out, and I can hear the turkeys getting settled in their roosts.

It has been an unusually cool, very windy and long spring in Western Oregon. Last year at this time I was enjoying strawberries from our garden and this year, I am eye balling them along with the Blue Jays-just waiting for them to turn ripe. We did miraculously get the whole garden planted, which is early for us, as our ground is so wet. No sooner did we get it all in and then we had a deluge for a few days. Thank you Mother Nature! The calendula and lemon verbena over wintered this year, so we are already busy harvesting flowers. This year we expanded our calendula, chamomile, marshmallow, and yarrow plantings. We also are planting spilanthes and holy basil this year-they are still in the greenhouse. We also started some lovely lavender from seed this year, called Betty Blue, something we have never tried before. Our new greenhouse makes so many new things possible!

The spring has been cooler than my liking, but the flowers sure thrive with these cooler temperatures. The roses especially are out of this world. My daughter Ginger and I get giddy from the fragrance of all the roses as we walk about admiring all the subtle nuances in their scents and all the different colors. We have started harvesting petals to dry and use for our wild rose face mask, as well as petals for our rose petal infused jojoba oil. We harvest the wild rose petals that grow along our fence lines as well as the heirloom roses that we have growing all over our farm. I answered an ad over 4 years ago for free rose bushes and rescued about 40 of them from the bulldozer. I was thrilled to find that they were all heirloom roses and all of them survived except two. Some were so large we had to pull them out of the ground with a truck! Fragrant, abundant, hardy and disease free, they have been a welcome addition to the farm.

Ah, a rose is a rose is a rose…the soft petal face of this flower, rose is all about protection (picture the thorns) and being soft and vulnerable at the same time. Many cultures anoint new born babies with rose oil & fill cribs with rose petals-believing that rose gives a sense of protection and grace during transition from the Mother’s womb to the outside world, and it represents the true feminine-giving the feeling that “all is as it should be”. In skin care, rose offers toning of delicate tissues, especially those of the face and around the eyes. It is a great choice for face care as well as baby care. I personally have a real connection to not only the plant, but the smell of rose too-it reminds me of our Victorian ancestors and Grandmothers and helps me feel connected to all the women who were here before me.

We make gallons and gallons of rose and lavender infused honeys to use as face masks. We use raw honey from our local bee keeper. You can use this honey for your own face masks, or add it to a bath, a little in a cup of tea, or for assistance with wound healing. The rose and honey will nourish your skin and leave it feeling petal soft.

Gather rose petals from rose bushes that you are certain have not been sprayed. Flowers should be dust free and as clean as possible and most importantly-completely dry. Harvest when the sun has been shining on them long enough to ensure there is not any dew or moisture on the petals. Rose petals are very delicate and break down quickly and can easily mold.

Wilt your rose petals in a thin layer in the bottom of baskets or use an old window screen. Keep them out of direct light and wind. Depending on the temperature, you can wilt them for several hours or over night. You don’t want them to become so dry that they look like potpourri.

Meanwhile, let some honey warm up either in a window sill or double boiler. Do not let the honey boil-or it will destroy the enzymes and nutrients.

Fill a jar with your rose petals, packing the jar-but not too tightly. Pour warm honey over the rose petals making sure to completely cover the plant material. Use a chopstick to get rid of any air bubbles and let it infuse in a warm place for 2 weeks. You can use a windowsill if you make sure to wipe the condensation off the inside of the lid every day. I like a spot that is near a window, but not in direct light or I put it in a warm place outside and move it in at night.

Once done, you can heat your jar up in a double boiler over very low heat until it is thin enough to pour. Pour honey through cheesecloth into a clean jar. Use the spent rose petals in an old sock for the most amazing bath ever or feed it to the chickens. They will thank you for it! Store honey in a cool dry place with lids on tight. Will last for years.

For the month of May and until June 15th, we decided to donate a portion of our sales of all blue burdock products as well as other products that contain the Azulene essential oils to the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation, they maintain funds for the Willamette Habitat Restoration, an organization that helps rebuild and maintain crucial habitat for a little known butterfly called the Fender’s Blue. Once thought extinct, this butterfly was rediscovered in the 70’s just across the highway from us. The largest populations of this endangered species are in Baskett Slough Wildlife Refuge. The month of May is egg laying month for these little beauties, and we wanted to help in some small way. We look forward to making this a tradition!

They are thriving and keeping us entertained. We look forward to unleashing them on the farm soon and being followed around by the herd of gobblers. Our facebook page has a short video of them if you are interested in seeing the little cuties live.

With the growing number of poultry on the farm, plans are in place for a new and much larger chicken coop. We are recycling a lot of old barn wood to make this happen and have included a brooder area as well as more of a waterproof overhang for the girls to stay dry. We expect to start this project in the next month or so.

We are happy to welcome Jayme Gorman to the Wild Carrot family for our shipping and receiving position and are so thrilled to have her with us. Not only is Jayme a busy mama of 4, but she is also a graduate of the Western Culinary Institute as a pastry chef.

Once thought to be extinct, the Fender’s blue butterfly was rediscovered in 1989. It was listed as an endangered species in 2000. Fender’s Blue once thrived in the prairies of Oregon, but during the past 140 years an estimated 99 percent of this native prairie has been developed for farmland or other uses. Only 408 total acres of land host populations of these butterflies. Habitat loss from agriculture and urban development poses the greatest threat to the Fender’s blue butterfly. Another major threat is the invasion of exotic plants such as Himalayan blackberry and Scotch broom, which have been out-competing and displacing the Kincaid’s lupine (Lupinus sulphureus var. kincaidii) and other native wildflowers in upland prairies where the butterflies live. The Kincaid lupine is listed as a threatened species in the wild.

Adult butterflies begin laying their eggs primarily on the Kincaid’s lupine, during the month of May. Once the larvae hatch, the caterpillars feed briefly on the plants in early July. Soon after that time, they drop to the base of the plants for the fall and winter. In February or March they emerge as caterpillars, crawl up the plants and feed on the lupine leaves. The larvae then enter their pupal stage and emerge as adult butterflies in May.

The Fender’s blue is a small butterfly in the family Lycaenidae, with a wingspan of about 2.5cm (one inch). As its name implies, the upper wings of male Fender’s blue butterflies are predominately iridescent sky blue. Females have rusty brown wings. The dorsal surface of both sexes have a black border within a white fringe and the underside is pearly gray to dirty chalk, with black and brown spots, outlined in white.

The largest known populations of this butterfly exist in the Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge-just across the highway from us. In honor of the egg laying season, we are donating 10% of all proceeds through the month of May to help restore and protect endangered habitat for this brilliant blue beauty.

Perhaps you already know this lovely little blue star flower that grows abundantly in our gardens and is so delicious in salads. But did you know that the cold pressed seed oil of this flower is the highest known plant source of gamma linoleic acid (GLA) , and omega-6 fatty acid? Borage seed oil (Borago officinalis) has also been clinically proven to be anti-inflammatory and to help calm inflamed skin. It is an excellent choice for sensitive skin, eczema, psoriasis, and very dry skin-especially hormonally changing skin.

It takes 200 pounds of fresh pomegranates to produce 1 pound of precious Pomegranate seed oil (Punica granatum)! One of the only plant sources of conjugated fatty acids, and high in anti oxidants, the cold pressed oil from pomegranate seeds offers protection to the skin, is anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and assists with skin elasticity. Several studies have shown pomegranate seed oil to help strengthen the epidermis and promote cell regeneration. It is especially good for problem skin and conditions like eczema, internally or externally.

Jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax-making it incredibly stable. It is highly penetrating and closely resembles the natural sebum in our skin. This golden cold-pressed seed oil also contains a natural anti-inflammatory known as myristic acid.

Contains cold pressed organic borage seed oil (Borago officinalis), pomegranate seed oil (Punica granatum ), organic jojoba oil (Simmondsia chinensis), non-GMO tocopherol vitamin E oil, and essential oils of organic lavender (Lavandula angustiflia), Moroccan blue chamomile (Tanacetum anuum) and green myrtle (Myrtus communis). For external use only.

These precious droplets of oil are concentrated and are meant to be used sparingly-literally 4 or 5 drops will do. Use at night or in the morning-whichever you prefer, although we prefer to give the skin a rest at night and let it do it's own cell regenerating!

Spring is a good time of year to seek wild plants like dandelion and fresh chickweed, calcium-rich nettles and vitamin C packed douglas fir tips. You can only eat so much fresh plant material in a day however-so making an herbal vinegar is a great way to extend the bounty of spring and it’s nourishing gifts. Making your vinegars is so easy and they are incredibly delicious. I find them a really great delivery system of minerals to my 3 year old too. She loves vinegar and vinegar-type foods. I use these vinegars mixed with carbonated water and a little honey, with olive oil for salad dressing, as a marinade for cucumbers, as a hair rinse, and if burdock root-as an anti-fungal spray.

Some favorites for spring time vinegars:

dandelion flowers, violet flowers, apple blossoms, nettle leaf, burdock root, fir needles, chickweed, cleavers, hawthorne blossoms, elder blossom, roses, rosemary, thyme, wild onion, garlic, and any combination of the above.

Directions:

Select plant parts desired and discard any unwanted parts. Do not wash unless you are using roots. If using roots, chop as finely as possible, if using leaves like nettles, I like to take the leaves off and discard the stems. Violet flowers I use with the leaves too-as they are packed with nutrients too.

Loosely pack a canning jar with plant material

Pour vinegar over plant material ( apple cider, red wine, or champagne-but not white)

Use a chopstick or other non-metal object to loosen air bubbles in jar

Cap jar with either a plastic lid or cork. If using a metal lid, place a piece of plastic wrap over jar before screwing on lid. Vinegar is acidic-and will rust your lid.

Shake jar often. Steep for 2-6 weeks.

Strain off plant material and store in glass bottles.

Keeps for about 1 year. Enjoy!

Announcing our Refill Depot!

More and more health food stores in the NW and Northern California are bulking up their bulk offerings. All of our lotions are packaged in glass and many of our customers feel inclined to reuse these containers. To meet growing demand, we now offer all of our lotions in gallon sizes for ease of refilling. You can’t miss our containers-they are the big amber glass jugs. Our website now has a refill depot section that allows you to find a store near you that offers our products in bulk. You will need to check with each individual store for what products they carry-as they all vary. If your local health food store doesn’t carry our products in bulk, please urge them to do so-they may not even know there is a demand for it.

Special Promo -free seeds with every order

We have been busy planting the greenhouse for weeks now. This week we plan to do our biggest planting yet and get some serious herbs, flowers and vegetables growing. The greenhouse already looks like a giant chia pet with tidy bright green rows of salad greens sprouting. Daddy’s Greens continues to take shape and will be available in just a couple more weeks! In celebration of spring and renewal, we encourage you to get out and plant!

From now until May 1st we will be giving away free calendula seeds from our farm with every order. Planting instructions will be included. Be sure to check back on our website in the Month of May for Mother’s Day specials. We will be featuring a few different products that are perfect gifts for new Moms, Grannies, and the goddesses in our lives.

Featured Product: The aftermath detox bath

Tis the season to detox. My liver gets sluggish at this time of year and food doesn’t excite me like it normally does. I feel like my energy wanes and I get lazy about food choices. Tomorrow begins a week long cleanse eating only fruit and veggies and nuts. No caffeine, alcohol, dairy, grains or meats. Plenty of detox tea, saunas, and liver meditations. I also depend on hot baths filled with sea salt and rosemary essential oil to assist in detoxification and stimulate circulation-as I often get cold when I fast or cleanse. <a href=”/store/botanical-goodness/aftermath-detox-bath/">The aftermath detox bath was created for this very reason.

We use organic Breton sea salts, hand-harvested off the coast of France in the same way that it has been for hundreds of years. These beautiful salts are grey in color and have a soft, powdery texture to them. They are not washed or refined, so the salts contain all the vital minerals our bodies desire. We also add Epsom salts to aid in further detoxification, and rosemary verbenon essential oil. Rosemary verbenon essential oil is a particular chemotype from Rosmarinus officinalis. It is specific to liver detoxification. The smell is not as camphorous as rosemary can sometimes be-it is uplifting and deep.
