What we’re up to…

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

We are building our dream greenhouse! The project is taking longer than we had anticipated with the spring we have had, but we keep propelling forward.

The greenhouse project has been a dream of ours since we met farming at the Evergreen State College 15 years ago. It is a 30 x 96 greenhouse manufactured by Oregon Valley Greenhouse. We thought we would be on our second planting of greens by now and transplanting herbs like mad-but those weather conditions were last year. We have had to wait for the ground to dry enough to get any equipment back to the job site as well as be dry enough to drill holes for the posts. That is where we are at as this goes out-post set in concrete and awaiting the next step-actually putting up the frame.

Check out our progress on our facebook page for photos and more details.

Is it dry enough yet?

We got a call from Glen today from Applegate excavating in Dallas wanting to come out tomorrow and start moving dirt. He was our amazingly fast and efficient earth mover for the yurt project and we have asked him to help us with our greenhouse project. Ha! As I sit here and write, the rain is pouring loudly on our metal roof and smattering hard against the windows. There is still standing water on our place heading to the “back 40″.

Water is the biggest challenge for us here at Winged Vibration Farm. We have either too much or too little. Planting happens late around here and perennials struggle with all the water. Then when the heat comes we run out of water. The greenhouse will greatly assist in creating another ecosystem that will give us a jump start (and refuge) when the spring rains continue to pour.

Glen will have to hold his horses. It could be another month before we can really get this project going! The greenhouse is here and waiting to be constructed. We are trying hard to be patient.
